Welcome!

A few years ago I started an artschool for children named  "De Kleine Schilders"  (Little Painters). For children in the age of 6 till 11. It all began in small groups of 4 children in my own home. Parents but especially the children were very enthousiastic. The news spread quickly and many new children signed up. My home became too small and in 2011 a real artists studio crossed my path. At this moment there are about 30 children following the lessons!
In recent years I learned a lot about teaching children how to paint. It really is an "art"! I like to give information by means of small work shops, to parents, teachers or anyone who works with children.
Children are capable of much more than we often think  Look at their work pictured on this web site and judge for yourself!

Marianne Moliere worked about twenty years as a psychotherapist. In addition she was always painting. She was, among others, educated by painter and musician Michiel Dhont of Atelier Het Molenpad in Amsterdam.
In 2009 she started an art school for children named  "De Kleine Schilders" (Little Painters)
At this moment she teaches the art of painting to children and grown-ups.
Marianne works and lives in Broek in Waterland, the Netherlands.

At the moment I teach one course per year of ten lessons. The children work in small groups of five or six per group. I try to put as much children as possible of the same age in one group, but my experience is, that this is not absolutely necessary. Because the groups are small it is possible to work individually and often the older children help the smaller ones.  The lessons last one hour and fifteen minutes. From experience I know that the power of concentration of the children decreases as the lessons last longer....and mine too!

The best age to start in terms of muscular movement development is six years. I also noticed that when children go to high school their interest decreases because their lives change so much. So I work with children from six till eleven years of age. To start a group of adolescents is still on my wishlist.

After they come in, we start class often with ten minutes looking at art, we have a short conversation about what the children see and they can ask questions about the artwork they are observing.  Than they start working.
We often work with a theme, for example Circus, Renaissance, Countrylife, Japanese art, etc. One of the things we do more than once, is what I call, "Masterpiece", which means that they copy the work of a famous painter. Sometimes they can choose a painting they like and other times I choose a work of which I think it will help the child learning certain skills. In the studio I have lots of examples, books, pictures, magazines etc.
All subjects needed to learn to paint, are covered, like perspective, portret, still life, landscape, knowledge of colour and form etc.
My guidance is intense, they can always ask for help, as often as they wish, but I also teach them to work independently. Sometimes when they have trouble drawing something, I make the drawing on another sheet of paper while they are looking. Afterwards I let them follow the drawing with their finger and after that they start on their own sheet of paper.

There are many more didactic methods possible, which I would like to pass on with much pleasure to those who are interested. I do this in the form of a work shop. Target groups are teachers , parents and anyone who works with children.
The rate for these work shops is  €20,00  per person per  work shop, materials included.  With a minimum of 4 people. They last about two hours.

The rate of the painting lessons for children is €15,00 per child per lesson. €150,00 for ten lessons. All material included.

Material:  I only use acrylic paint of the highest quality, like Ara and Golden. Drawing is done with charcoal or crayon only, no felt-tip pens are allowed.
We are also working with pastel crayon and occasionally with chamotte clay. Last year we made clowns of clay in the framework of the theme Circus. The children painted them afterwards.
For painting I use a heavy quality of paper suitable for painting with acrylics. I buy it in large sheets of 1 meter by 75 centimeter which I can cut in any size I want.

But the greatest challenge is to teach the children technical skills without them losing their youthfull spontaneity and directness . And so keeping the dreamy and fairy- like atmosphere in their work. In my opinion you can see this clearly in the pictured work on this web site.
